A Time For Play / JAMIE CHAPMAN

Looking for a way to loosen up my painting practice; I posted a call out on instagram requesting ‘people with faces’ donate their likeness towards my next body of work. It was to be an exercise in exercises.

On the 17th of August 2021 New Zealand got the call, we were going back into lockdown Lv4. With my pool of crowd sourced portraits drawn up, the studio beckoned; it was a time for play.

Throughout the painting process there is a constant conflict between paint and image; the push and pull of the surface and the illusion of depth; an endless struggle to let go of the source image and allow the paint to just be paint.

All portraits for this exhibition are oil on canvas, 250mm x 400mm, each $850, optional black or white tray frame; extra $100.
