Michelle Huizinga

Michelle combines her natural affinity with weaving and textiles with ceramics. Allowing intuition to guide her work, Michelle often simply starts with a form, texture or feeling and lets the piece take shape naturally. Her desire to weave into and around rock began with using mixed media to mimic stone, which led to a venture into ceramics to 'sculpt stoneware' prior to weaving it.

Flat white if I’m out but I’ll take it however it comes if I’m at a friends place

Of all time Frida Kahlo, naturally. And now that I’m exploring more with clay, Len Castle’s work always inspires me.

A tribute to my mother.

Consideration of the Māori concepts of Ihi, Wehi and Wana. 

My forever hero, in my mind she is the embodiment of the powerful woman. With a strength she undeniably inherited from her own mother, and a kindness all of her own, she is stoic, unwavering and enduring. She can weather the storm like no other. 

Recent years have brought about an awareness of her mortality. Reluctantly I resign myself to the truth that she is flesh and blood like the rest of us. Increasingly, I want to protect her from harm, from the hands of time and the reality that fragility is sneaking in. If only I could cocoon her in cotton wool.

Ultimately I can’t change that one day the roles will be flipped, they have already begun to do so. I entwine our qualities and armour myself with the knowledge that as fleeting as some things are, I’m lucky to be able to share these sentiments with her in the here and now.
